How to apostille or legalise a document
This section will mainly focus on the United Kingdom since that is where I am from. I will leave some useful links below for other countries too.

As I mentioned earlier, in the United Kingdom the Legalisation Office manage this kind of paperwork. You will need to send the documents you wish to get legalised/apostilled by post to the Legalisation Office. However, you must complete the online application first and pay the £30 application fee. The online application process also indicates whether you can send a photocopy of the document or whether the original must be sent. Before starting the online application, it is important that you have the following:
the documents you want to legalise
a credit or debit card for payment
the address you want your documents returned to
access to a printer
They advise that legalisation takes 1-2 days (plus postage); however, there could be delays during busy times.

Spain
In Spain, you first need to find which authority can legalise your document. This can often be a difficult process. However, there is a comprehensive guide on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. The ministry understand that this can be confusing so they have set up a contact phone number 13791655 and email address legalizaciones@maec.es.
United States of America
The Office and Authorisations at the U.S. Department of State are responsible for legalising and apostilling documents. Like Spain, the requirements are different depending where the documents were issued. Therefore, it is advisable that you check the website to be sure of the procedure.

Finally, the corresponding fees must be paid, providing proof of payment. The easiest way, if you have a digital certificate, is to make the payment online through the AEAT platform. But you can also pay through the electronic banking system (if you have an open account and an electronic signature), at an ATM, or by bank transfer if you are abroad.
How long does it take to get the Spanish criminal record check?
The administration has a legal period of 10 days to issue the certificate of criminal records after receiving the request. However, the most common thing is that they issue a response within no more than 3 working days after receiving the application, so it is a fairly quick process.

2) By post to the Ministry of Justice
Spanish or foreign residents in the Republic of Ireland can apply for a criminal record certificate from the Ministry of Justice by sending to it the necessary documents by post. You can request that the criminal record certificate be sent to you by post or by e-mail. If the certificate is to be subsequently subjected to diplomatic authentication or if it is accompanied by information from another EU Member State, it will not be possible to send it by e-mail.
The Ministry of Justice issues criminal records certificates within 21 working days after reception of the application.
The address to which the documentation should be sent is: Registro Central de Penados y Rebeldes, Ministerio de Justicia, San Bernardo 45, 28015-Madrid, España or any Gerencia Territorial del Ministerio de Justicia.
The applicant must send the following documents to the Ministry of Justice:
- Copies for the Administration and for the collaborating bank of the application form (formulario790), completed on computer, printed and signed.
- Copy of the passport certified by this Spanish Embassy (you will have to pay the consular fee that applies to a certified copy). Get an appointment to have a copy of your passport certified.
- Proof of payment of the applicable fee, together with the Administration's copy of the application form. If you are making the transfer from an account outside Spain, you must pay the fee into this account:

Hi, so my husband went to school there so he has some friends currently living there. He asked the one he trusted if they can help. He gave the person authorization to do the police certificate check on his behalf. First he had to talk with a lawyer in his country where he lives to develop the document for authorization, then send those papers over to the friend in Spain. The friend in Spain did everything else and got the proper stamps for the document to be valid in Canada. The friend sent the papers to my husband and he of course had to translate them to English. Very lengthy process, not sure if it could have been easier. I would suggest contacting a lawyer there to do it because not everyone has contacts there. FYI the first attempt with mailing the completed document on our own didn't work as the document went to the building but not the actually office, and I guess they are too lazy there to open and sort mail. I don't know.

Even if you try that way you will still have to go to the embasy, you need an stamp on the passport copy.
Notarized by whom? Because if the notary is from your country and not Spain is still not valid by itself you still need to go to the embassy so they verify its legal. So unless its a notary from Spain, you would be wasting you money... Also , I think they might not send it out of Spain...
Really DIY in this case is a waste of time...
Again you dont need a lawyer you have to go to the embasy or consulate... Its just 5 dollars to stampo, no lawer will help you will just lose money..
Well i got mine recently but cut ir short i paid around $300 to a lawyer in Spain she did everything and she sent me via dhl.

Hey,
You do not receive no confirmation email. PCC is generated within within 2/3 working days after thwy receive your documents (if you sent your docs with tracking details, you can check the exact date). Then the ministey sends the PCC to your authorised address by general post. It does not take that long. It took 14 days for South Korea.

If the certificate comes with electronic signature (as my case) this has to be legalised by the foreign affairs bureau, as in my case. You can ask them at least to stamp the certificate so should be fine with that.

Have you got it already? How long it took?
I have sent only the copy of my passport(front and back pages), Model 790 application and pay 3.74 euros via Bank Transfer.
I have applied a month ago but still waiting. I do not know how many months more I need to wait for..

I also requested a police certificate from Spain from abroad. Just follow the instructions from CIC and those on the Ministry of Justice Website provided. I git mine in less than two weeks after application ( I used courier post so it got there in 3 working days and I received it in about a week). Tt was pretty fast. best
They Ministry mailed the document through the mail. I believe they issued it to the consulate in Los Angeles, who forwarded it too me. They did not use a courier. I don't recall sending a pre-paid envelope or not, it was over a year ago.
